A colonoscopy is a procedure that helps us check your gut health. It gives us a clear look at your large bowel and the last part of your small bowel. On this page, we’ll explain the procedure, what you can expect, and why Westside Gastroenterology in Perth is a great choice for your colonoscopy.
Colonoscopy Perth
What is a colonoscopy?
A colonoscopy involves using a colonoscope, which is a long, thin, flexible tube. We pass this tube through your anus into your large bowel and the last part of your small bowel.
“The colonoscope sends images to a screen, allowing us to inspect these areas, assess your gut health, and diagnose any gastrointestinal conditions. Sometimes, we take tissue samples (biopsies) for further analysis. ”

The procedure is done as a day surgery in the hospital, so you can go home the same day. We perform colonoscopies at SJOG Murdoch Hospital, the Mount Hospital in Perth, and Peel Health Campus in Mandurah.
A colonoscopy might be needed for reasons such as:
- Abdominal pain
- Changes in how often you go to the toilet or the consistency of your stool
- Bleeding from your back passage
- Family history of bowel cancer or other risk factors
- Routine screening once you turn 50

Colonoscopy preparation
Before having a colonoscopy
To prepare for a successful colonoscopy, it’s important to empty your bowel completely.
Here’s what to do:
- Modify your diet: Follow a special diet for several days before the procedure.
- Take a bowel preparation medication: This laxative will cause diarrhoea and empty your colon. We’ll recommend the best one for you.
- Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, especially in the last day or two before your colonoscopy.
Please let us know about any medical conditions and medications, vitamins, or supplements you take regularly, especially if you have diabetes or kidney problems.
If you have any questions about your upcoming colonoscopy, feel free to contact us at Westside Gastroenterology.
Colonoscopy procedure Perth
During a colonoscopy
We perform colonoscopies as a day procedure at St John of God Murdoch Hospital, the Mount Hospital, and Peel Health Campus. Specialist anaesthetists are there to make sure you’re safe and comfortable.
“Before the procedure, you’ll receive a sedative to help you relax. Most patients are not fully unconscious but are asleep and won’t remember the procedure afterward.”
Dr Callum Pearce
Gastroenterologist Perth
The procedure usually takes between 20 and 45 minutes. You’ll lie comfortably on your left side while we gently insert the colonoscope through your anus and guide it into your colon. A small camera at the end of the scope sends images to a monitor, allowing us to carefully check the lining of your intestines. We might remove polyps or take small tissue samples (biopsies) for further examination.
After effects of a colonoscopy
After a colonoscopy
After the procedure, you’ll stay in the recovery area for an hour or two until the sedation wears off. Once you’re awake, we’ll give you something light to eat and drink. You might feel a little bloated from the air used during the procedure, but this will pass within an hour or so. It’s normal to see a small amount of blood if biopsies were taken.
Because of the sedation, it’s important not to drive, travel alone on public transport, operate machinery, sign legal documents, or drink alcohol for the rest of the day. We recommend having a friend or relative take you home and stay with you. You should feel fully recovered by the next day.
